Salinas Valley is located in central California, close to Monterey bay. It is between the Gabilan mountain range and the Sta. Lucia mountains. The Salinas river runs through the valley. Salinas valley is the setting for many of John Steinbeck's books. He grew up there and many of his stories are inspired by his childhood. Salinas valley is sometimes called 'America's salad bowl' because of all the crops that are grown there. Some of the crops that are harvested there are; lettuce, strawberries, spinach and celery. In the book George and Lennie are working on a farm harvesting barley. While it is still harvest in Salinas valley today, it is not farmed to the extent it was in the time period of the book.
Salinas valley has always been a large farming region and during the Great Depression, many people worked there. When people lost their jobs they would work any job they could so a lot of people moved out west to the farms for work. Men like George and Lennie would travel around and work at different farms harvesting whatever crops were in season. This was a common lifestyle for people during the Great Depression.
